Langtang region trekking is the closest trekking region to Kathmandu; it offers the great panorama of mountains, neatly placed villages and terraced landscapes. But the approach towards this region is very unique, as you can march towards this destination from a short taxi or a bus ride from Thamel to the roadhead at Shivapuri, which leads to the trail through the middle-hills countryside of Helambu valley. You have options to either circuit around or return to Kathmandu or cross the pass to the sacred lake at ‘Gosainkunda’, descend and then hike up the Langtang valley beneath mountains that form the border with Tibet.
The trek offers the splendid variety of natural and cultural diversity with spectacular Himalayan views. Well-known for its bio-diversity, the walk around this region bestows with dense pine forests, swift mountain streams, rugged rocks, grassland & meadows strewn with daisies and wildlife coupled with a view of sun-kissed snow peaks.
The hotspots of this region are Langtang, Gosainkunda, Helambu valley, Panch Pokhari and Tamang Heritage trail, which can be joined in various ways to make the trek more fun and exciting. The Upper part of the Langtang region are snow-ridges and High passes concealed in mist tiny lakes of crystalline brightness and glaciated mountain lakes.
The Langtang region is also protected as ‘Langtang National Park’ and has number of high peaks including Langtang Lirung(7246m). It is home to almost 4500 Tamang people, who largely depend on the national park for timber and firewood.Gosainkunda, renowned as a sacred place for Hindus, is an alpine freshwater oligotrophic lake in the National park itself, at an altitude of 4,380m with a surface of 34 acres. Hindu mythology attributes Gosaikunda as the abode of Hindu deities Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri. From Gosainkunda, the trek path descends to Syabru, an interesting village on the crest of a ridge. The trek then enters the ‘Langtang Valley’, a dense forested area, where animal killings is strictly prohibited. Higher up, past the tree line, lies Kanjin Gompa, an architectural masterpiece. Its sloping walls complement the slopes of the Langtang Lirung on the backdrop.
Trekking in the Upper Langtang is beyond the range of tea houses, as there are hardly nay lodges around.
